Former Company Member Mark Swift Makes the Leap from Stage to Ears

Former Hedgerow fellow Mark Swift is making his transition from the stage to the airwaves with his independent company “Oh, The Fool.” The first project of Oh, The Fool is Life In Sonderville, which found its original audience at Hedgerow Theatre Company.

Life In Sonderville is a daunting story to write because of its choose your own adventure nature and will boast a whopping ninety seven episodes. If that already makes your head spin as an audience member, don’t fret: the story is broken down into chapters and each path only takes seven to ten sections to complete. Therefore,  a one time listener can fully engage in this dark comedic mystery in just over an hour.

During his time as a fellow, Swift came up with the idea of a choose your own adventure story, bringing an interactive element to both stage and podcasts, and combining the two mediums into performance.

After being given the go-ahead by Producing Artistic Director, Jared Reed, to pen a rough pilot for Life In Sonderville, Swift made the first steps on his new journey.

Thanks to his training at Hedgerow, Swift feels prepared for any eventuality. Having adapted stories for the stage, Swift learned about the importance of being a concise and compelling storyteller.

A particularly useful skill that Swift gained from his Hedgerow experience came from his time as an actor, where he learned the mastery of the verb. As an actor and storyteller, it is more important to show rather than to tell. However, if you are going to say, then emphasize the verbs.

Swift uses these skills in his writing of Life In Sonderville. As the show is written for radio, the visual medium is gone, and since it is a play, there is nothing but dialogue. The result is a dialogue that is active, informative, and most importantly, entertaining.

Currently, Oh, The Fool is running a Kickstarter for the production of Life In Sonderville. With the success of its Kickstarter, Swift hopes to honor his Hedgerow home with the fully first few episodes of Life In Sonderville, later this month to be enjoyed online!


Mark Swift: A Student of Comedy

“I like to think that I have been unofficially studying comedy all my life,” says Mark Swift one of the nimble actors of Mark Brown’s tour-de-force adaptation of Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days.  “I am of the opinion that there’s no greater gift to give someone than laughter, and that really helps around the holidays because I have a big family.”

From a technical standpoint, Swift likes to throw himself at the wall until someone laughs, and then, he says, it sticks. As he puts it, his favorite part of the show is, “mak[ing] an absolute ass of [him]self and no one ask[ing] [him] to leave the premises.” For Around the World in 80 Days, running now until August 13, that was exactly the type of comedy Producing Artistic Director, Jared Reed (who plays Phileas Fogg) and Director Damon Bonetti were looking for in an actor.

“Damon is a dream to work with. He has a clear vision and knows the mathematics behind physical comedy to an absolute ‘T’. In my opinion, what I believe is more important in what Damon brings to a project is his willingness to let the actors invent and play with the material. Unless of course it’s terrible, then he’ll tell you it’s terrible (and that’s a great thing).”

This is the third time Bonetti and Swift have worked together, having previously explored No Sex Please, We’re British and Boeing Boeing. For Around the World in 80 Days, however, the script called for a new type of comedy.

“I think at its heart, the comedy of 80 Days comes from the sheer number of characters being played by a total of five actors. Of course, it helps that the jokes are well written, but when you add in the fact that the joke is being told by a character, played by an actor who was just wearing a totally different costume- it becomes a joke in and of itself.”

All the world’s a stage, literally, in this theatrical retelling of Verne’s classic, as Hedgerow Theatre Company’s small troupe of actors take on a global collection of carnival characters. Stampeding elephants, raging typhoons, runaway trains, and unabashed slapstick fill this farcical adventure from start to finish.

“Comedy is the best way to be open and honest. If you do comedy correctly, you can convey a potentially controversial opinion in a way that your audience will be more willing to accept it,” says Swift. “I find humor in most things, but to me, the funniest jokes are those you have to really look for. When a joke is hidden within the background to success that tells me that every aspect of joke telling has been put into play: The writers intended the joke, the director picked up on it, and the actors executed it. To me that’s the ultimate way to tell a joke.”

Swift is no stranger to this style of comedy, appearing in most of the Hedgerow comedies over the last two years as a Fellow. He has been seen in The Servant of Two Masters and Dracula, but most recently appeared in The Prisoner of Zenda and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, two shows that tested his versatility as an actor.

“Including 80 Days, all three shows had me playing several characters, and including me crossdressing in each (spoilers). It has been a challenge to keep my characters in 80 Days fresh and unique from what audiences may have seen as of recently.”

But Swift is not the only familiar face to return to Hedgerow for Around the World in 80 Days. Long time company member Zoran Kovcic (Boeing Boeing and No Sex Please, We’re British) joins Hanna Gaffney (Boeing Boeing) and Sarah Knittel (The Servant of Two Masters) to create a world of characters.

“In dramatic comedy, in most cases, you have an ensemble to back you up. Dramatic comedy is a team sport, in stand-up- most of the time- you are on your own. All of the challenges of comedy are present in both, although I am certain that audiences are less likely to heckle a group of performers rather than one individual.”

Adult ticket prices are $35, with a $3 discount for seniors. Tickets for those 30 and under, as well as for students, are $20. For groups of 10 or more, tickets are $18. Prices include all fees and are subject to change.

Shows are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be a Wednesday matinee on August 2, at 2 p.m., and Fogg’s adventure concludes on Sunday, August 13, at 2 p.m.

Mark Swift is a second year company member of Hedgerow Theatre from New Jersey. He has been seen in No Sex Please, We’re British, Dracula, A Christmas Carol, The Mysterious Affair at Styles and now Boeing Boeing. 

This week has been a big week in the press for the Hedgerow Theatre Company as their production of Marc Camoletti’s Boeing Boeing continues to be recognized for its mastery of farce. With a Barrymore Recommendation and rave reviews from Philly.com and DC MetroArts, this year’s summer farce is one of the best in Hedgerow’s long history of performing this genre.

Directed by Damon Bonetti, Boeing Boeing features Bernard (Andrew Parcell), a playboy who, with the help of his witty maid Berthe (Trice Baldwin),  is “engaged” to three gorgeous airline hostesses: Gloria (Meredith Beck), an American, works for TWA; Gabriella (Hanna Gaffney), an Italian, is with Air Italia; and Gretchen (Allison Bloechl), a German, flies with Lufthansa. During a visit from an old college friend from Wisconsin, Robert (Mark Swift),  Bernard’s perfect flight plan is thrown into severe turbulence when weather and a new jumbo jet upset his timetables and bring all three women to Paris at the same time.

Swift, who worked with Bonetti on last year’s No Sex Please, We’re British, is once again the comic foil as Robert, and has once again wowed audiences. DC MetroArts raves about his “physical hijinks,” and Philly.com says, “Like a clown, he [Swift] exists to make us laugh; like a great comic actor, he elicits sympathy, and in his character’s reversal, a hint of admiration.”

“I really do love the show as a whole, but if I had to pick one moment in particular,” Swift observes, “it would be during the second half of act one, once Bernard realizes that two of his fianceés are in his flat. From this point on the farce kicks into overdrive and it’s such a fun ride. I couldn’t be more pleased with my fellow castmates. If it weren’t for their skills and on/off stage generosity, I can’t imagine myself having nearly as much fun.”

Having Bonetti as director was once again a positive experience. “I learned from Damon that farce is a machine. Every single line, physical gag, and even the slightest pause for silence are all part of an enormous ticking comedic clock,” notes Swift. “During the rehearsal process I watched as all my castmates experimented with new things, everyday coming in with some new joke and it was really inspiring. I love working with people who challenge me at every corner to up the ‘funny ante’.”

In last year’s British comedy, Swift played Brian Runnicles, the uptight chief cashier at a London bank, who finds himself having to dispose of vast shipments of pornography when his friend Peter’s wife accidentally signs them up for a mail order service. In this year’s French farce, Swift’s portrayal of Robert, a simple Wisconsin boy visiting his philandering friend Bernard in Paris, is on point, filled with all the physicality of Jerry Lewis and the wit of John Cleese.

I have always loved Jim Carrey, and seeing what he was able to do definitely inspired me at a young age to pursue acting,” Swift explains. “I have always appreciated physical humor and practiced falling down and being an all around ‘goofy mover’ ever since I was a little kid. As I grew older and discovered TV Land, I fell in love with Three’s Company and of course, the late and great John Ritter. To me, he was much like Carrey in that he was a very physical comedian—but I felt like I was able to learn more from Ritter in the ways of balancing physical humor and dry delivery.”

Swift graduated from Rider University with a B.A. in theatre performance in 2015, landed a job as an Acting Fellow at Hedgerow, and went straight to work in No Sex Please. Now a seasoned veteran at Hedgerow, with shows like Dracula (Renfield) and The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Alfred) under his belt, he has embraced the playful side of Hedgerow.

“The single most important thing I have learned through my time here at Hedgerow Theatre is that stupid is good,” Swift states. “There have been zero instances during any rehearsal process where someone has said ‘That’s so dumb’ and meant it as anything but the highest praise.”
